Weekend Weariness

I didn’t get any writing done this weekend, nor did I watch the free preview weekend of the writing channel. I slept a lot and read a lot.

Saturday I did shower and dress and put makeup on and go into town for the writers meeting I had found out was held on the first Saturday at 2 p.m. at the downtown library.

I finally left the downtown libary at 2:15, after no one else showed up. I was a bit annoyed, but then I thought (1) I didn’t call first to confirm and (2) there was a readers and authors conference in town this weekend, so perhaps they were attending that.

I had a most irritating exchange with someone who is trying to start a new writers group in town. She’s been e-mailing and mailing things out to everyone in the area for a few months, and I haven’t responded because, well, I already had a writers group that serves this area, so why bother?

I had received notice of a meeting on March 28th, and I wanted to attend out of curiosity, but I was all booked up that day, so I sent an e-mail letting her know I wouldn’t be able to make it.

I got the following e-mail on Friday (red is my comments):

Dear Collier county writing enthusiast,  (forgivable – this was a mass mailing – overlooking the capitalization)

You are receiving this re: the Naples writers group. Due to low response rates in the prior two months, I’m not sure if this is going to your spam or if individuals are not interested in meeting.  (do I detect a hint of snark?)

Thanks to <redacted>, who graciously hosted our first meeting last Saturday at his residence.  Books A Million  has confirmed that it host future meetings at its retail store located in Mercato, Naples.

During the past week, the FWA asked if I would take over its Lee and Charlotte members as that group leader has stepped down.  I have declined to take on two additional counties in order to get this group started. (except that you wouldn’t be “getting this group started” you would be taking over an existing group)  Anyone who would like to take over is welcome to do so. Please contact the FWA at their website for more information and a spreadsheet of names of FWA members that you will be dealing with on your own.  And good luck. (more snark, really?)

For Naples writers who would like to meet regularly and seriously intend to show up, please contact me. (this tone is consistent with the tone of nearly all communications received from this group leader. I should also point out that they’ve had exactly ONE meeting, so the success or failure can’t really be determined yet.)

/end rant

Also note the lack of specified date and time for the next meeting.   In fact, it took two more e-mails from me to determine which date and which time I should show up at said location.

This little diatribe, assuming it is read, will probably not make this person my biggest fan.  In fact, I’ll likely be uninvited.
