I was on my way home from work on Wednesday afternoon, and I decided to turn off the CD player (I’ve had a Maroon 5 fixation of late). The next song that came on the radio was Natalie Merchant’s “Wonder”, which is a song I have always loved.
I got to thinking about the whole topic of change, and where change begins: outer change begins on the inside. My self-talk sucks most of the time. I forget how to honor the amazing and magical person I truly am, because I get bogged down with what the world thinks of me – or rather, what I think that the world thinks of me.
First change of 2009: how I think of me.
Wonder – Natalie Merchant
Doctors have come
from distant cities
just to see me
stand over my bed
disbelieving what they’re seeing
they say I must be one of the wonders
of God’s own creation
and as far as they see they can offer
no explanation
newspapers ask
intimate questions
want confessions
they reach into my head
to steal the glory
of my story
they say I must be one of the wonders
of God’s own creation
and as far as they see they can offer
no explanation
I believe
fate smiled and destiny
laughed as she came to my cradle
“know this child will be able”
laughed as my body she lifted
“know this child will be gifted
with love, with patience
and with faith
she’ll make her way”
people see me
I’m a challenge
to your balance
I’m over your heads
how I confound you
and astound you
to know I must be one of the wonders
of God’s own creation
and as far as you see you can offer me
no explanation
I believe
fate smiled and destiny
laughed as she came to my cradle
“know this child will be able”
laughed as she came to my mother
“know this child will not suffer”
laughed as my body she lifted
“know this child will be gifted
with love, with patience
and with faith
she’ll make her way”
Strong post. I like the last line of your prose and the last line of the song. I hope both will reverberate in my mind for a while. Thanks.
